Tax season can bring on a burden but it can also fatten your wallet. That's only if you finally get to see your cash. Derrick Hopkins is supposed to get his tax return next week. It may not be late but he said "this is probably by far the longest that it's taken so far." Hopkins filed his taxes about a month and a half ago. However, horror stories about lengthy returns have him questioning his own. "I've been hearing everywhere I go. To the grocery store, gym, school and church. I've heard several stories about people who haven't received their taxes back," said Hopkins. Luckily Kim Hartley isn't one of them, but she hasn't been as fortunate in the past. "Last year I filed my federal return electronically and my state return paper and it took maybe until June or July I think before I got my state refund," said Hartley. Tax experts like Justin Berry say that could be because of the recent state of the economy. "I would say that over the past couple of years as overall state and local government budgets have been trimmed because of the economy there's not as much money in the treasury and they're having a harder time making ends meet and issuing these refunds," said Berry. The fastest way to see your return Berry says is filing electronically. By providing your bank account and routing number the transaction is completed in a shorter amount of time. That worked for Kim this year but she still wishes the state would speed things up. "We have to file our returns by a certain deadline I don't see why the state ought to be required to process it and give you your refund by a certain deadline," said Kim.
