The Alabama Senate judiciary committee will reconsider a bill to establish a "covenant marriage" when lawmakers return from spring break. The bill that would make it harder for couples to get divorced. Before getting married, the covenant marriage option would require couples to go to counseling before they could obtain a marriage license. If a couple wants a divorce, it would require them to go through more counseling before a divorce can be granted. Critics of the bill say this is a government intrusion into marriage. Supporters say it wouldn't be required -- merely an option engaged couple could choose. Three other states have a bill similar to the covenant marriage option on their books. Louisiana passed a covenant law in 1997. The Alabama House and Senate return from spring break April 3.
