A local firefighter is accused of arson tonight and some of the fires he set were put out by his own department. Bryan Sewell, 19, is charged with setting a wildfire and filing a false police report. He could face more charges. Bruce Hubbard, the chief of the Renfroe Volunteer Fire Department in Talladega County said that Sewell worked with him for more than a year. Chief Hubbard said that Sewell seemed to be picking up some skill as a volunteer firefighter, when the department began responding to a lot of brush fires. In fact, Talladega Sheriff's Office investigators said that Renfroe Volunteer Fire Department responded to an abnormal number of fire calls in a short period of time as far back as January 2012 and as recently as this past Tuesday. Investigators said they began questioning Sewell when he filed what they say is a false police report. Since then they suspect he has been involved with more than 20 brush fires, many of them a short distance from one another, and many just off the side of a road. Chief Hubbard said he and his fellow firefighters were shocked to hear that Sewell may have put them all at risk as they responded to the fires. Investigators tell us one fire could have reached a neighborhood had it gone unnoticed too long. Sewell is being held on a $40,000 bond at the Talladega County Jail.
