Savannah Hardin's stepmother Jessica Hardin is still charged with felony murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of her stepdaughter. A typo on an indictment read in court yesterday led the D.A. to skip over the felony murder charge and only read the charge of aggravated child abuse in yesterday's hearing. The indictment said Savannah was carrying "food" for an extended period of time when it should have said "wood." The indictment was amended today.
It will be up to a jury to find Hardin guilty of either charge. Savannah's grandmother Joyce Hardin Garrard faces a charge of capital murder for her role in Savannah's death. Both women are accused of forcing the nine-year-old girl to run laps and carry wood as punishment until she collapsed and later died.
Both women entered not guilty pleas to their charges in an Etowah County court Wednesday. A hearing to check on the status of these cases is set for June.
