It's constant and steady, it doesn't stop,"Anniston Police Investigator Kyle Price refers to copper and metal thefts in the area. For years police departments have been tracking down and arresting people who are stealing copper and other metals to make a quick buck. As thefts started overshadowing other crimes in the city, thieves continue to risk it all. "Our stuff is in the middle of the day. A lot of times we catch, actually caught a couple guys yesterday that were stealing railroad track metal off the railroad tracks in the middle of the day," said Price. Those type of thefts now have police cracking down. Since mid-January two officers are now strictly working copper thefts. And it's showing. "In the past six weeks I don't know the numbers but we have seen a vast drop in cases that we've been assigned to so I would say about 50%," said Price. Police prevalence may be more obvious but there are still victims. Especially like you home owners out there. "Vacant houses there's no one there for months at a time especially if people who rent the houses are out of town," said Price. Ben Stringfellow lucked out on a recent purchase of a home on the west side of town. "All of the copper wiring in the house had already been cut and stolen," said Price. He got a deal but now he's having to fork over a little more cash for new wiring. His neighbor on the other hand wasn't so lucky. "It had already been completely remodeled and they came in and cut all the wiring in it and it had to be replaced again," said Stringfellow. Stories likes these are what continue to push officers like price to make more arrests and put a dent on thefts.
