Joyce Garrard and Jessica Hardin remain behind bars today as their case quickly makes its way through the court system. Last Friday, Garrard was indicted for Capital Murder and Hardin was indicted for Felonly Murder. Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp is building a case against both women in the death of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin, but Garrard is at the top of his list since she is facing the death penalty. The DA's office has even referred to her as a drill sergeant from hell. "There had to be a point in time that she knew that this being carried on any further that a death would occur," Harp said. Harp is referring to the allegations that Savannah was forced to run for three hours carrying wood weighing anywhere from six to eight pounds. At one point the prosecution claims that Savannah was crawling, crying and begging to stop. Joyce Garrard's attorney Dani Bone said that these allegations are completely false. "I think it makes for good newspapers, it makes for good television. I think it's absolutely unfair to this family who again have lost a child, a grandchild and now they have two family members who were falsely accused and wrongly incarcerated," Bone said. The sheriff's office said that they stand by their investigation.
"You will hear defense attorneys, and everybody else says they are jumping to judgement or they got a grand jury in two weeks to indict them.. Be golly we've done a good job on this case," Sheriff Todd Entrekin said. And this is a case that was almost swept under the rug as a medical death.
"I think the witnesses in this case who came forward were courageous people. They got involved in trying to make sure justice will be sought for savannah's death," Harp said.
