An Etowah County grand jury has indicted Joyce Garrard, 46 of Atalla, and Jessica Mae Hardin, 27 of Atalla, in the death of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin. Garrard has been indicted for Capital Murder and Hardin was indicted for Felony Murder. Both women were served the indictments today and remain in the Etowah County Detention Center.
Garrard is now being held without bond because of this new development, while Hardin remains in custody on a $500,000 cash bond. In an email press release, the DA's office said that DA Jimmie Harp and Sheriff Entrekin will address these indictments in a press conference Monday, March 12 at the sheriff's office. The indictment process begins when a DA presents evidence to a grand jury for review. The grand jury decides whether there is enough evidence to support the charges presented to them and presents their decision to the DA.
Garrard's indictment for Capital Murder is significant because under Alabama law, she could face the death penalty. Hardin is Savannah's stepmother and Garrard is Savannah's grandmother. The women are charged with murder in Savannah's death for allegedly forcing the 9-year-old girl to run for three hours until she collapsed from seizures. Savannah died three days later on Monday, Feb. 20 from dehydration.
