Thousands of dollars are spent annually to market Northeast Alabama, Calhoun County, and more specifically Anniston, AL, and Oxford, AL. However, does this work. One indication is the relative interest tracked by Google, which commands just over 70% of search engine traffic worldwide.
In a recent analysis using Google Trends, buyersUSA Consulting determined that while interest in Anniston and Oxford has increased steadily over the past decade, it fails to compare to several similar cities, such as San Angelo, Texas, and Paducah, Kentucky. Like Calhoun County, Anniston and Oxford, which roughly have the same population, have declined in total population over the past ten years and continue to steadily decline. Although the area lost Fort McClellan well over ten years ago, it has failed to regain sufficient major employers to offset the loss of the fort. Also, despite regional efforts, generally marketing of the area has failed to produce necessary results despite a wide variety of promotable assets.
Conversely, somewhat similar metropolitan areas such as San Angelo, Texas, (population 97,492), and Paducah, Kentucky (population 25,018) have shown a population increase of 4 to 6 percent just over the past few years. This is reflected in the trends reported by Google. As compared to the metropolitan area, which includes both Anniston and Oxford, these cities have received considerably more interest. This reflects visionary leadership and a sustained and focus interest in using arts and culture as a branding tool to attract industry, retirees, and other investors. Although Oxford has translated its ever-increasing retail base into additional city amenities and Anniston’s admirable One City, One Vision effort coupled with its currently visionary city leadership shows great promise, the area still has a long way to go if it is going to match the accomplishments of several fast rising cities.
buyersUSA Consulting, which is located in Anniston, constantly tracks the number of searches for the area, the county, and its major cities. Additionally, the company tracks the traffic rank of all of the area’s media outlets as that is another popularity indicator.
