A May 6, 2014, article posted on AL.com (see Roy Moore's twisted history) criticized what was then a recent speech given by Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore. In that speech, Moore stated that the followers of religions other than Christianity (and we supposed Judaism) do not have 1st Amendment Rights. That amendment supports the freedom to worship or practice any religion as well as the protection of free speech. He contends that the word religion only pertains to Christianity as the faith supports the idea that there is a God the Creator.
The AL.com article specifically points out that his opinion would mean that religions such as Islam, of which the followers insist that they worship the same "God the Creator" as Christians and Jews and revere the Old Testament, and Buddhism, which is not based upon -- but does not reject -- a God-Creator entity, are not in fact religions. Therefore, the followers have no right to practice in the United States.
As Kyle Whitmire of AL.com points out, Moore incorrectly bases his comments on an extract from a statement made by Founding Father and later president Thomas Jefferson. The statement was from the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. If Moore had actually read that statute, he would have quickly seen it is a rejection of his narrow views.
Moore has been controversial for a number of years. First, he gained notoriety for posting the Ten Commandments at his district court in Gadsden, Alabama. Later, when his popularity propelled him into the top position at the Alabama Supreme Court, he again included a Ten Commandments monument in the court's building. This later resulted in his expulsion by the United States Supreme Court. Most recently he re-attained his position in a subsequent election. During his campaign he assured voters that he would uphold Alabama laws as written rather than filtering them through his controversial views. While we cannot say that he has violated this promise, his speech regarding the meaning of religion shows that most likely he is still an unstable judge.
