An Alabama Senate committee has approved the first of 9 nominations to vacancies on the Auburn University Board of Trustees.
The Senate Confirmations Committee voted 9-0 Thursday to approve the nomination of Autauga County farmer and businessman Jimmy Sanford to a 7-year term on Auburn University's governing board. Sanford's confirmation still must be approved by the full Senate.
Sanford was 1 of 9 people nominated for the Auburn board by the Auburn trustees' selection committee. The committee received 170 applications for the vacancies and interviewed 35 candidates.
The confirmations committee had not planned to take up any of the Auburn trustee nominations at Thursday's meeting, but Sanford was at the meeting and his nomination was taken out of order.
