(WDNG) - The number of Alabamians using seatbelts jumped last year according to a federal study. A report released this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a record 97 percent of Alabamians buckled up in 2013, up from only 90 percent in 2012.
The seat-belt rate was measured using surveys conducted across the state as part of the 2013 “Click It or Ticket” traffic safety campaign. The NHTSA report comes as Alabama begins its 2014 “Click It or Ticket” safety belt enforcement campaign this week.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs says they provide local law enforcement agencies in the state with grant funding each year during the Memorial Day holiday period to conduct seat-belt safety checkpoints and extra patrols in areas where a high number of vehicle crashes have occurred.
ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said in a Wednesday statement that he is encouraged that so many residents in the state are getting the message that seat belts save lives.
The 2014 “Click It or Ticket” campaign will continue through June 1.
