Despite calls for presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich to step down after only one Super Tuesday win in Georgia, the former Speaker of the House told a crowd of supporters at Birmingham's Harbert Center Wednesday that he's staying in the race because he believes he's the only candidate who can beat President Barack Obama.
Gingrich's campaign changed its strategy this week to focus on the deep south primaries Tuesday in hopes of clinching a win in Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi. In Alabama, 47 delegates are up for grabs, and in a one-on-one interview after Wednesday's rally, Gingrich said winning the delegates will give his campaign the momentum it needs. "Well, I think I'd probably call myself the comeback grandfather," laughed Gingrich. "I think that's a more accurate phrase." He added: "And part of the reason why I'm staying in the race is because the two major candidates are going to have a hard time beating Obama. If you look at Romney's track record and you look at Santorum's track record, Santorum lost Pennsylvania by the biggest margin in the history of the state. Romney has had a strategy of out raising his opponent by running negative ads. There's no possibility that Romney can out raise Barack Obama." Gingrich believes a president can't govern by trying to figure out what Congress will accept. He said his experience sets him apart from other candidates. In his campaign speech, he focused on energy independence and an aggressive foreign policy for national defense in hopes of swaying voters.
According to a survey conducted by the Capital Survey Research Center, if the Republican Party primary election for president were today, Romney would win with Santorum following in on a close second. A total of 510 qualified voters were polled in the survey.
Gingrich will campaign in Mississippi Thursday. Senator Rick Santorum is scheduled to campaign in Mobile Thursday, and Mitt Romney will campaign in Alabama Friday.
The Alabama Republican Party will host a Presidential Forum in Birmingham Monday, March 12. All four candidates have been invited to take part in the event. Gingrich and Santorum have confirmed they will be in attendance.
