The suspect in an April sexual assault along Interstate 59 has been apprehended in Georgia. The Associated Press reports Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported assault near mile marker 117 in the Birmingham area on April 23.
A 34-year-old woman reportedly told deputies her car broke down and a passing motorist stopped to help. According to the AP, the woman said the motorist sexually assaulted her, took her money and cell phone and left her on the side of the road.
WIAT-TV reports authorities received leads from Mississippi and Georgia which led to information about a Mississippi man that robbed a woman in that state and stole a church van the day before the Alabama freeway attack.
21-year-old Malachi Josephus Moody of Jackson, Mississippi, reportedly drove to the Atlanta area after the attack, robbed another victim and led police on a chase before he was captured.
Moody is expected to be extradited back to Alabama to face charges of first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.
