A woman and her child were killed after a train struck their vehicle at a railroad crossing in Oxford Saturday morning.
According to police, a 35-year-old Oxford woman,Temeshica Chatman and her 7-year-old son Nytavioun Powell died around 7 a.m. after the car they were passengers in was struck by a Norfolk Southern train at the Coleman Road crossing, which is off Highway 78. The driver, a 20-year-old woman and daughter of the mother killed, was airlifted to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her condition is unknown at this time.Chatman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her son Powell was pronounced dead at Regional Medical Center in Anniston later Saturday morning.
Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge said the lights and gate at the crossing were functioning prior to the accident, which remains under investigation.
