A student denied admission to a public Fort Payne school has been enrolled. The Associated Press reports Fort Payne schools have allowed a Mexican-born 17-year-old to begin attending classes after he was twice denied admission to Fort Payne High School.
The Montgomery-based Southern Poverty Law Center has said the school system has changed policies to make it clear that students can enroll without a Social Security number and also removed information from a website about the state’s law cracking down on illegal immigration. According to the AP, major parts of that law have been overturned by courts.
The teen’s family reportedly moved to Alabama from Colorado in January. On April 7, the SPLC sent the school district a letter asking the school to immediately enroll the student. The law center says the teen was enrolled on April 10.
