Hour Two guest for Pamela's Place 4/11/14
What Human Right Destroys So Many Children?
As a world-traveling and world-renowned artist from Pakistan, Zulfiqar Rashid has experienced the cultures and traditions on nearly every continent.
His travels have been immeasurably educational, and the expression of humanity in each country carries tremendous beauty, from Sao Paolo to Beijing to Madrid and beyond. Sadly, various destinations worldwide often have a terrible common denominator – a disgusting abuse of children, often at the hands of devoutly religious adults.
“I am a man of God and I cannot fathom how these adults can square their religions with what they do to innocent children, who are, in many cases, their own blood,” says Zulfiqar Rashid , ( www.zulfiqarrashid.com ), author of “ The Rat-boys of Karalabad,” a book that explores one particularly heinous form of child abuse in the name of religion.
While child abuse can be found in nearly every major religion, Rashid mentions a part of the world in which he is especially familiar – the Middle East. In Afghanistan, a 10-year-old girl was recently forced by her much older brother, a local Taliban commander, to wear a suicide-bomber vest with the intent of blowing herself up a police station. Luckily, the police could hear her cries of pain from the cold as she crossed a freezing river, and she was saved by the men she was manipulated into trying to kill.
In Pakistan, a 14-year-old boy wasn’t as lucky. While on his way to school with his friends, a stranger asked him where the school was. Suspicious, the boy eventually tackled the stranger, who was wearing an explosive vest and exploded it while being detained. The stranger had planned to bomb the school for religious reasons.
“I simply cannot wrap my mind around the idea of killing children, exploiting them, or willingly putting them in life-threatening situations; yet, I know this happens not only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also all over the world, including the developed countries, where it takes the form of human trafficking and sex slavery,” he says.
“And what do these people do it for? To promote an ideology? In the name of religion? To make money? All they are doing is slowly killing their future, and the future of humanity, because that is what children are.”
