Oxford Police say the driver in a deadly hit and run accident admitted to texting while driving.
Police believe that the hit and run happened betwee 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday evening in the 2200 block of Barry Street. A passerby found the victim some time later in a ditch suffering multiple injuries. The victim, identified as Ricky Lee Suddarth of Panama City, Fla., later died.
Police recovered some debris from the scene and were able to determine that the vehicle involved was a tan 2004 Ford Explorer. After putting out a BOLO on the vehicle, they found it parked behind an apartment complex in Oxford.
Police say the driver admitted over the phone that he was texting before the accident and left the scene. The driver has indicated he will turn himself in to authorities within the next day. Police say he will be charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and texting while driving.
