(WDNG) - State officials have convicted 19 people in the past two month for making false unemployment claims.
Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees on Monday said his office works with local District Attorney offices to identify and prosecute individuals who attempt to defraud the state’s unemployment system.
According to a release from the state labor department on Monday, 19 individuals were convicted between January and February for illegally receiving more than $74,000 in unemployment benefits.
Pamela D. Slater, of Anniston, pleaded guilty last month to making false statements in order to receive more than $2,300 in benefits. Beeta N. Robinson, of Attalla, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree theft of property after an investigation found she received more than $2,200 worth of benefits.
18 of the 19 individuals convicted received suspended jail sentences.
