Birmingham Police confirmed reports that a Kindergarten student at Central Park Elementary brought a gun to school on Monday.
According to Lt. Sean Edwards, a 6-year-old girl found a firearm in her backpack during snack time. A classmate informed the teacher, who then notified police.
Investigators have gathered that the firearm was unintentionally placed in the child’s backpack. Lt. Edwards says the child and her mother were involved in a car accident Sunday night. The mother’s sister came to help. As they were emptying the car, the sister placed the firearm in the backpack, intending to retrieve it later. However, the firearm was never removed.
Lt. Edwards says at this time, the Birmingham Police Department does not plan to file charges against the mother and sister.
DHR is looking into this case. They have removed the child from the mother's care while they investigate.
Monday afternoon, Birmingham City Schools released the following statement regarding the incident:

School officials immediately secured the school on lockdown to ensure student safety. Law enforcement and Central Office administration were promptly notified, and arrived on the scene within minutes. This incident and details surrounding it are currently under investigation.
