(WDNG) - Portions of the state park atop Alabama’s highest point remain closed after an ice storms nearly two weeks ago knocked down power poles and hundreds of trees.
About half of Cheaha State Park remains closed on Monday morning although volunteers and workers have cleared away some of the storm debris. Park officials on Monday described many of the trails through the park as a wreck but said Saturday’s Cheaha 50K ultra marathon was held as planned.
Coordination efforts continue this week to get volunteers raking, sweeping and blowing trails clean. Volunteers are being asked to bring hand tools and dress accordingly. Anyone interested in helping clean storm damage is being asked to call to park to work out schedule.
Volunteers can call Jamie or Mandy at 800-610-5801 for more information on cleanup.
