(WDNG) - An Ashland man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing inmates while he worked as a jail administrator in Clay County.
The FBI’s Birmingham Division says 48-year-old Jeffrey Scott Cotney on Wednesday was granted a plea agreement for pleading guilty to four criminal charges of abusing three inmates.
Cotney was indicted in November 2013 with eight counts of deprivation of rights under color of law between May 2009 and spring 2010 while he worked at the Clay County Detention Center.
Cotney admitted to forcing one inmate to a strip search without justification and coerced an inmate into sex on multiple occasions, including on the side of the road during a trip to Oxford.
According to the FBI, Cotney also admitted to ordering a fourth male inmate into lockdown for 45 days before transferring him to state prison when the prisoner rejected a sexual proposition.
As part of the plea deal, Cotney must register as a sex offender, can no longer work in law enforcement and faces up to four years in prison.
