(WDNG) - Snow and ice that crippled parts of north Alabama last week resulted in heavy damage and the closure of the Cheaha State Park.
Park superintendent Tammy Power says workers at Cheaha State Park spent the weekend cleaning up parts of the park atop Alabama’s highest point. She said electricity has been mostly restored after extreme winter weather moved through the area last week but adds there continue to be a few problems at some buildings.
The park will remain closed through the week. Power hopes to have the park re-opened by this weekend in time for a 5K race.
Volunteers are being requested for cleanup at the park this week. Power said coordination efforts are underway this week to get volunteers with raking, sweeping and blowing trails clean.
Power asks volunteers to bring rakes and gloves and adds people wanting to help with the cleanup should dress accordingly. She says people interested in volunteering for cleanup should not just show up at the park, but instead call the park to work out a schedule.
Volunteers wanting to help clean up Cheaha State Park can call Mary at 1-800-610-5801.
