ANNISTON (WDNG) - While the snow is tapering off this hour, road conditions in Calhoun County continue to deteriorate as a winter storm charges into the area. Emergency Management Agencies in Calhoun and Cherokee counties have deemed some lesser-traveled roads extremely hazardous. According to a civil emergency alert issued shortly after 9 p.m., some roads may be impassable.
Officials say these conditions will persist through the overnight hours and travel on roads should be reserved for first responders.
A steady snow had been falling for several minutes during the 9 o’clock hour, with large flakes accumulating on grassy areas and the roadway of Leighton Avenue. Shortly after 10 p.m., a very light snow flashed in front of streetlights as a slush slowly melted into downtown Anniston stormdrains. Temperatures at WDNG Broadcasting Central at this hour register 30 degrees.
The National Weather Service says precipitation may continue until 1 a.m. and forecasters expect up to 3 inches of snow and ice in the area. Many areas of north and central Alabama, including Calhoun County, remain under a Winter Weather Warning until 6 a.m. Thursday morning.
Public and private schools in Calhoun and many surrounding counties will remain closed on Thursday. BAE Systems is expected to return to normal operations on Thursday, but company officials ask employees to use discretion before returning to work in the morning.
The Koch Foods plant in Ashland has cancelled night shift operations on Wednesday and day shift operations on Thursday. No information for the Koch Foods plant in Gadsden was immediately available on Wednesday afternoon.
Warming stations have also been opened at the Carver Community Center in Anniston and the Oxford Civic Center in Oxford.
