(WDNG) - Calhoun County was mostly spared from icy conditions overnight, but Tuesday night poses yet another threat. Law enforcement on Tuesday morning said most roads in Calhoun County and Anniston were wet but bridges may still be prone to ice.
Dozens of schools across the state cancelled classes on Tuesday in anticipation for the weather and portions of north Alabama have already seen up to 5 inches of snow accumulation by sunrise Tuesday. Locally, Oxford City Schools have announced classes will be cancelled on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham expects snowfall accumulations Wednesday morning to be heaviest across northeast Alabama. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Anniston and most of north Alabama until Wednesday. Gov. Robert Bentley has since declared a state of emergency in preparation for the weather.
The storm comes only two weeks after another winter storm shut down much of the region and left an estimated tens of thousands stranded in schools, cars and workplaces.
Temperatures in Anniston are forecast to hover around freezing until Thursday afternoon, when high temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s.
