(WDNG) - A thaw is on the way for the region after another night of sub-freezing temperatures. All public and private schools located in Calhoun County will remain closed for a third full day Friday after nearly a week of frigid temperatures, inches of snow and icy road conditions.
Temperatures at the Anniston Airport dropped into the teens by Friday morning.
Anniston police said all city roads were open on Thursday night except for Henry Road and a portion of Greenbrier Dear Road. Those roads are open only to local traffic.
Main streets are reportedly open in Oxford and other communities across the county, but authorities warn many secondary streets may pose a hazard. The Calhoun County EMA said may Calhoun County roads remained impassable Thursday night.
Eastbound traffic leaving Calhoun County came to a grinding halt for most of Thursday due to lingering ice patches on Interstate 20 and U.S. 78. Traffic in these areas appeared to be moving smoothly early Friday morning, although some ice patches were seen in the 6 o’clock hour.
Weather across east Alabama is expected to warm over the next several day, but another round of winter weather is possible by the second half of next week.
