(WDNG) - A Hard Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. for most of Alabama on Thursday morning. Public safety agencies across Calhoun and surrounding counties say road conditions deteriorated Wednesday night and continue to urge motorists to remain off roads.
The Calhoun County EMA says city and county schools will remain closed on Thursday, and many businesses will remain closed or have delayed openings.
Temperatures across the region dipped into single-digits overnight and have not risen above freezing since Tuesday afternoon. Lows at the Anniston Municipal Airport dropped to 5 degrees Thursday morning, and rural areas reported temperatures nearing 0.
Alabama Power said about 400 customers in Jacksonville were impacted by service outages Wednesday night and Thursday morning. More than 12,000 customers statewide were out of power at 7 a.m. Thursday.
9,300 customers across central Alabama were without power; 4,600 of those customers are in Gadsden and Sylacauga.
Anniston City officials on Thursday say City Hall will tentatively open at noon and law enforcement officials in Weaver say vehicles left abandoned will need to be removed today.
Weather forecasts expect temperatures in Anniston to reach freezing by 11 a.m. and climb to a high of 43 degrees by 3 p.m.
Business owners wanting to report delayed openings can call the WDNG business line, and neighborhood road conditions can also be reported to the WDNG business line at (256) 236-8291.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Multiple law enforcement agencies remind motorists that many roads remain impassable on Thursday morning. We ask listeners not to use any roadway until conditions improve.
