Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is declaring a state of emergency in advance of a winter storm that's moving into the state.
Ice is expected to be the biggest safety threat as colder temperatures and precipitation move into Alabama early Tuesday. Temperatures aren't expected to rebound until midday Thursday.
Bentley says he's encouraging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel.
The National Weather Service is predicting 1 to 3 inches of snow across central and south Alabama and ice accumulation that could lead to power outages.
Alabama transportation crews are hustling to move salt and spreader trucks, normally only kept in north Alabama, to the southern part of the state.
The state is also postponing special elections that had been scheduled for Tuesday to fill vacant legislative seats.
