(WDNG) - A federal report says the state of Alabama is violating the Eighth Amendment by failing to protect women prisoners at a south Alabama prison. The U.S. Department of Justice on Friday submitted a letter to Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley with the results of the federal investigation that was launched last year.
The letter says that reviewed information suggests “systemic deficiencies” at the Julia Tutwiler Prison in Wetumpka that facilitated sexual misconduct by prison workers. The report says prison staff have harmed the women with sexual abuse, rape, and threats of sexual abuse.
State Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas believes the findings are off-base and tells The Montgomery Advertiser that the letter from federal officials is based on a visit from last year. He is quoted by AL.com saying “I don’t think they give us enough credit for everything we’ve started and are trying to keep moving.”
The federal reports says that their investigation has been expanded to evaluate other allegations regarding inadequate conditions and discrimination.
