Common Core curriculum standards for public schools will be one of the topics at panel discussion Tuesday night at the Davis Theatre at Troy University in Montgomery.
Speakers at the debate-style discussion, Alabama Education Crossroads, will include state school Superintendent Tommy Bice, Donald W. Nalley, Jr., a certified public accountant from Huntsville, Terrence O. Moore, associate professor of history at Hillsdale College, and Jane Robbins, senior fellow with the American Principles Project.
Charles W. Campbell, associate professor of law at Jones School of Law at Faulkner University, will moderate the discussion, which will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The event was organized by Citizens’ Voice for Truth.
People who attend are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to the Salvation Army.
The state Board of Education voted to adopt the Common Core standards in 2010. The standards, which apply to English and math, are part of the state's wider set of education standards known as the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards.
Some oppose Alabama’s use of the Common Core and support legislation to repeal the standards.
The state BOE has responded to the criticism with a couple of recent moves, including one to modify state standards last week.
