(WDNG) - The Justice & Civil Rights Initiative of Jacksonville State University will hold its inaugural interest meeting on Thursday evening. Initiative president Ed Moore III says the group is being formed to address civil rights infringements concerning social, civil and criminal issues on local, national and international levels.
He said his three year broadcasting career at JSU’s campus radio station inspired him to form the group. “As a reporter, it sometimes will tug at the strings of your heart and you want to be able to help people,” Moore said by phone on Wednesday. “You want to be able to get involved and you want to be able to make that difference in people’s lives,” he said.
Moore believes some people may have a preconceived notion of what civil rights entails and said the Justice & Civil Rights Initiative of JSU will focus on civil rights issues that go beyond issues of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. “That’s what civil rights is really all about,” Moore said.
The group is still putting together an executive team but already has Moore as president and JSU Student Government Association Chief Justice Torsten Dryden as the group’s vice president. The initiative will be based on the campus of Jacksonville State University, but Moore said the group will be open to students and non-students alike.
“We’re going to need people outside the university setting to assist us with what it is we’re trying to do,” Moore said.
Moore said he submitted paperwork in November that formally established the group on the JSU campus. He said administrative tasks remain, including adopting bylaws and appointing executive members.
Thursday’s meeting of the Justice & Civil Rights Initiative of JSU will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Merrill Hall on Woodward Drive in Jacksonville.
