(WDNG) - A groundbreaking ceremony for a new housing complex in Anniston is set for next week. The city of Anniston and the Anniston/Calhoun County HOME Consortium last week announced the construction of a new duplex home in the Model City.
Rita Flegel is the executive director for the Anniston-based The Right Place, a non-profit agency that provides affordable housing and homeless services in Calhoun County. She says the agency wants to use the property for affordable housing with other supportive services attached.
Flegel is quoted as saying “permanent supportive housing is a long-term solution for families that are low-income with complex needs,” and adds that the new duplex is a start to helping solve some critical housing needs in the area.
The project will reportedly result in a new 2,500 square foot duplex comprised of two-bedroom family units. The project is expected to be completed by mid-April and is using more than $200,000 in federal Housing and Urban Development grant money.
Anniston Mayor Vaughn Stewart says this type of program will give Anniston families the opportunity to live up to their potential in decent, safe and affordable housing.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Supportive Housing Duplex is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14 at 10 a.m. on Circle Court in Anniston.
