Police continue to investigate a deadly accident that left a Leander school district teacher and her son dead Friday night.
The accident happened at about 11:15 p.m. in the 7000 Block of North R.R 620, north of R.M. 2222. That's in Northwest Austin Texas.
60-year-old Peggy Howard, a kindergarten teacher at Steiner Ranch Elementary School, was pronounced dead just before midnight at the scene of the accident. Her 18-year-old son Cale Howard, a senior at Vandegrift High School, died several hours later at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.
The crash involved 3 vehicles: a Chevrolet Avalanche, a Toyota Prius, and a Toyota Camry.
Witnesses told police the driver of the Avalanche ran from the scene. He is identified in court documents as 21-year-old Nicholas Michael Justin Wyzykowski. Wyzykowski is currently a student at the University of Alabama.
When officers arrived on scene, witnesses told deputies from the Travis County Sheriff's Office the man later identified as Wyzykowski ran without stopping to check on victims in the other vehicles. Witnesses say he was only wearing a towel at the scene. Right now it's unclear why he was only wearing a towel.
Wyzykowski was found soon after at a nearby apartment complex.
Witnesses told police Wyzykowski was driving southbound on F.M. 620 between 80 and 100 miles per hour.
An officer with the Austin Police Department DWI Unit noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Wyzykowski's breath.
The investigating officer said Wyzykowski was uncooperative, indifferent and cocky. He refused to complete a sobriety test and told officers they could get his blood sample from an attorney in a few days.
In a test that was run for medical purposes, his BAC was 0.27%.
Wyzykowski faces 19 felony charges: • 2 counts of Intoxication Manslaugter, a 2nd degree felony • 2 counts of Manslaugter, a 2nd degree felony • 4 counts of Intoxication Assault, a 3rd degree felony • 4 counts of Aggravated Assault, a 2nd degree felony • 5 counts of Failure to Stop and Render Aid in the 3rd degree • 2 counts of Failure to Stop and Render Aid in the 2nd degree
Wyzykowski was treated for minor injuries at the hospital before being released to the Travis County Jail.
His bond for all of the charges totals $185,000.
Five other people, including another passenger from the second vehicle, and four from the third vehicle involved, were taken to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.
