A former assistant principal at Pelham High School has been arrested on sex charges.
Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office say 33-year-old Catherine Michelle Bell, of Alabaster, turned herself in Thursday afternoon and was charged with three counts of "school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years".
Cindy Warner, public relations and community education supervisor with Shelby County Schools, released the following statement regarding Bell's arrest:
"The Shelby County School District always takes these types of allegations seriously. The school district took immediate action when we were first made aware of the allegations. The employee was placed on administrative leave while the matter was being investigated by the school district, with the assistance of local law enforcement. She subsequently resigned from her position on November 21."
Thursday evening, Bell was released from Shelby County Jail on a $90,000 bond.
