(WDNG) - Changes are coming for Alabama’s Medicaid program in time for the federal Affordable Care Act. The Alabama Medicaid Agency late last week announced six changes to the state’s Medicaid program that mainly impact prescriptions.
Friday’s release provided information for healthcare providers and highlighted changes including a limit of five outpatient pharmacy prescriptions for a majority of healthcare consumers and a three-month supply limit on some medications, including contraceptives, antidepressants and others.
According to Friday’s release, mandatory coverage required under the Affordable Care Act will require authorized agents to be reimbursed for promoting smoking cessation. Other changes sparked by the new healthcare law changes coverage for some benzodiazepines and barbiturates.
Those changes to Alabama’s Medicaid are scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.
