Dangerous thunderstorms spawned tornadoes, lightning, and hail Friday across much of Alabama, killing one person, injuring several others and destroying dozens of homes. The Tallapoosa Sheriff's Department confirmed at least one person dead and two others injured in the storm at a house along Highway 49 in the Dadeville area.
Five people were hurt Friday morning when an EF-1 tornado struck Madison County near Huntsville. The storm destroyed 25 homes and damaged 50 other homes and four schools.
Another storm in Limestone County destroyed 15 homes and damaged 100 more. The storm also caused damage to the Limestone Correctional Facility, a state prison. Friday night, a tornado was reported in central Alabama. Damage from the storm was reported in several locations across Dallas, Perry, Autauga and Chilton counties.
A tornado may have touched down in the Verbena and Mountain Creek communities in Chilton County. No one was injured in the Chilton County storms, but at least six homes in the Verbena area were damaged. One woman was rescued from being trapped in an upper floor of her home. Rescue workers were able to quickly get her to safety. Downed trees in the area blocked at least one road but the roads in Chilton County are now clear, according to the Chilton County sheriff.
