(WDNG) - Details have been released behind the accidental death of a 16-year-old hunter in Coosa County. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday said they believe the canoe belonging to 16-year-old Gordon Gray Godwin of Homewood capsized in the frigid waters of Oakachoy Creek in Lake Martin last week.
The teen's body was recovered on Nov. 29 by divers from the Tallapoosa County Rescue Squad. Godwin’s parents reported him missing on Thanksgiving Day after he failed to return from a duck hunting trip.
Authorities from three counties along with state officials assisted in the search and found Godwin’s sunken 13-foot Coleman canoe the last Friday. Searchers located Godwin’s body on sonar that afternoon.
Authorities believe the cold water temperature, heavy hunting clothes, and the fact Godwin was not wearing a flotation device all were factors in the teen’s death. Media reports this week say his friends held vigils in Montgomery and Homewood during last week’s search.
