Equipment damage is being reported after a Wednesday morning fire at the Calhoun County Jail. WBMA-TV reports an investigation is underway after a dryer caught fire while drying clothes. Jail staff reportedly used fire extinguishers to put out the flames.
According to WBMA-TV, the fire was contained to a dryer in the jail’s laundry room, and smoke was reportedly contained to the dryer room and a food storage area. No inmate housing areas were in danger.
WBMA-TV reports Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said a preliminary inspection showed that exterior piping may have been clogged in an area not addressed by regular maintenance.
One clothes dryer was reportedly damaged and a second dryer was considered a total loss.
