Gov. Robert Bentley is spending this week in Japan to meet with trade officials. The Associated Press reports Alabama’s governor this week med with Hiroyuki Ishige, the CEO of the Japan External Trade Organization, a group that reportedly works to promote trade and investment.
According to the AP, Bentley presented Ishige with a pen crafted from a dogwood tree that was downed by the April 2011 tornado in Tuscaloosa. More than 65 Japanese companies reportedly operate in Alabama, representing a more than $4 billion investment.
Bentley is expected to return to the state on Friday and attend the annual Southeastern U.S.-Japan Association conference in Biloxi, Mississippi, which begins on Nov. 17.
