(WDNG) - A tractor trailer driver was killed in an accident that shut down part of Interstate 20 in Talladega County for about seven hours Friday morning. The Alabama Department of Public Safety on Friday said an accident on Interstate 20 at mile marker 168 claimed the life of 32-year-old Jonathan Graham of Branch, Ga.
According to Public Safety Sgt. Steven Jarrett at the State Trooper Jacksonville Post, Graham was driving a 2006 Volvo tractor trailer when he rear-ended a 2014 International tractor trailer that was stopped due to an earlier accident.
The nearly 7-hour long shutdown of I-20 eastbound between Riverside and Eastaboga was reportedly caused by two separate incidents involving a total of three tractor trailers.
Public Safety Information Specialist Robyn Litchfield said Lincoln police were originally dispatched to I-20 eastbound mile marker 171 for an overturned tractor trailer shortly before 6 a.m. Friday morning. The roadway was reportedly shut down for about one hour before the fatal accident occurred.
All eastbound lanes of the freeway remained closed to traffic until 1 p.m. when a single lane was opened. Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge reported via Twitter on Friday morning that eastbound traffic was being redirected to U.S. Highway 78 at exit 162 near Riverside until exit 173 at Eastaboga Rd.
