(WDNG) - An early morning traffic accident on Interstate 20 has left one person dead and shut down a portion of the freeway. Alabama Department of Public Safety Information Specialist Robin Litchfield on Friday said one person is dead after the morning accident on Interstate 20 at mile marker 168.
Alabama State Troopers said all eastbound lanes of the freeway remained closed to traffic around 9:30 a.m. as a result. Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge reported via Twitter on Friday morning that eastbound traffic was being redirected to U.S. Highway 78 at exit 162 near Riverside until exit 173 at Eastaboga Rd.
According to Litchfield, Lincoln police were dispatched to an overturned tractor trailer on I-20 shortly before 6 a.m. Friday, but she was unsure if it was the same incident that led to the freeway's closure. Lincoln police could not be immediately reached on Friday for comment.
The identity of the person killed has not been released until family has been notified. Officials say more information may be available as soon as Friday afternoon.
