A sentencing hearing is entering its fourth day for four former prison employees connected to the death and cover up of the fatal beating of an inmate. The Associated Press reports more witnesses are expected to testify on Thursday about the 2010 beating death of Rocrast Mack at the Ventress Correctional Facility in Barbour County.
Defendant Joseph Sanders on Wednesday reportedly took the stand in a Montgomery courtroom to apologize to the family of Mack for telling lies to cover up the incident. According to the AP, former prison supervisor Michael Smith could be sentenced to life in prison and three other defendants are facing lesser sentences.
Testimony in previous court proceedings reportedly showed Mack had severe bruising, teeth missing and a swollen brain after being beaten outside of a prison dorm, office and infirmary. The events reportedly started when a female correctional officer hit Mack and he returned the blow.
