A Calhoun County teenager was arrested Friday after admitting to deputies he raped a high school classmate earlier this month.
Calhoun County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Matthew Wade says the victim has a mental disability.
Wade says the suspect convinced the victim to skip school and then pressured her into having sex. The suspect told investigators he targeted the victim because he knew her disability would make it easier for him to have sex with her and get away with it.
According to Wade, the 17-year-old suspect is charged with one count of second-degree rape and one count of second-degree sodomy. Both are felonies in Alabama. The suspect will not be charged as an adult, according to Wade.
The crime came to light, Wade says, about two weeks after the incident when the victim told her mother about what happened.
