Fifth-ranked Jacksonville defeated No. 7 Midfield 53-42 in the semifinals of the AHSAA girls Class 4A state basketball tournament at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Golden Eagles got double-doubles from post players Sharon Osterbind and Kenyatta Earvin.
Osterbind led the way with a team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds while Earvin added 13 points and 10 rebounds as Jacksonville improved its mark to 30-4 on the season.
The Lady Golden Eagles led by five at the half, and 11 heading into the fourth after Osterbind scored nine in the third.
With the win, Jacksonville advances to Saturday’s 9 a.m. state championship game where it will face the winner of tonight’s matchup between Andalusia and top-ranked Good Hope. If the Golden Eagles win, they’ll be the first girl’s basketball team from Calhoun County to win a state title.
Midfield point guard Jasmine Steele, an Alabama signee, scored a game-best 30 points but did so on 11-for-42 shooting. No other Patriot scored more than four.
Midfield’s LaToya Wilson had 16 rebounds.
The Lady Patriots (18-14) ran a box-and-1 on Jacksonville standout Lacey Buchanon throughout the game. But the Samford signee still managed to finish with nine points, six assists and three steals.
Jacksonville freshman Virginia Poe added seven points, including a pair of 3-pointers all during the final two minutes of the second to spark the Lady Golden Eagles before the half. She also grabbed 11 rebounds.
