(WDNG) - At least one person was injured in a Friday morning traffic accident on Highway 431 that involved a tractor trailer and another vehicle. First responders remained on the scene after 1 p.m. Friday after a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Pelham Ln. and U.S. Highway 431 in Alexandria.
A tractor trailer remained on the side of the road Friday afternoon while Calhoun County HazMat and Alabama Department of Transportation crews cleaned up the right northbound lane of the roadway. Alexandria fire, Weaver fire and Alabama State Troopers were also on scene to shift traffic to a single northbound lane.
Alexandria Fire Chief Mike Howard said at least one person was injured. He said Alexandria fire received the call shortly before 11 a.m. Friday and that a single victim had been transported to an area hospital before he arrived. Howard was not certain of the extent of those injuries.
Howard said on-scene he was unaware how many passengers were in the second vehicle and said that the driver’s side fuel tank of the tractor trailer had been ruptured which spilled diesel fuel onto the roadway.
According to Howard, he hoped to have the scene cleared by 1:30 p.m. but said that ALDOT may take several hours before the roadway is cleaned and reopened to traffic.
