Forest officials say the Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area and some surrounding areas will be closed to the public. Flooding on May 18 has caused the U.S. Forest service to reevaluate the recreational areas in the known floodplain (Photo: openstreetmaps.org)
(WDNG) - The Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area remains closed after flooding in May. U.S. Forest Supervisor Steve Lohr said on Tuesday that the Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area, Lakeshore Trial and a small section of the Chinnabee Silent Trail located in the Talladega National Forest will remain closed until at least the end of November as a result of heavy rains that flooded the area on May 18.
According to a Tuesday release from the Forest Service, officials from the Talladega Ranger District will complete an environmental analysis to determine whether safety risks to the public can be mitigated. Lohr said the Forest Service may have to reevaluate the recreational uses at Lake Chinnabee since portions of the area, particularly the camping area, are within known floodplains.
Talladega District ranger Gloria Nielsen said in Tuesday’s release “we are asking the public to be patient as we work through the analysis process.”
