(WDNG) - State health officials and local law enforcement are asking the public to safely dispose unused prescription drugs during a Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday. Many police and sheriff’s departments across Alabama will participate in the event by establishing drop-off points for prescription drugs that are expired, unused or unwanted.
Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says getting rid of potentially dangerous controlled substances is an important step in fighting drug abuse and drug-related crimes. State Health Officer Dr. Donald Williamson said that everyone should be mindful of the risks posed by unwanted prescription drugs and their potential for misuse.
Saturday’s Prescription Drug Take-Back Day has been promoted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency since 2011 and has seen regular growth in public interest in the program. The DEA says they recovered 371 tons of prescription drugs at nearly 6,000 locations across the country in May, 50 percent more than the previous event.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office will have a collection point at the Quintard Mall in Oxford on Saturday, Oct. 26. Other collection points in the area will also be in Gadsden, Piedmont and Heflin.
