The Auburn Tigers found themselves running away with the game against the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday.
The Tigers made no delays in scoring. Their first possession saw a 74-yard drive in 6 plays. Tre Mason picked up the score with a 20-yard rush over the guard. Forcing the Catamounts to punt after 3 plays, the following drive got Auburn into the endzone in 5-plays. The score on the second drive was awarded to Jay Prosch on an 8-yard pass reception into the endzone.
Western Carolina found their score through a hard-fought field goal. The 10-play drive covered 43 yards for the Catamounts and got them to the Auburn 32 yard line. Richard Sigmon kicked the 49-yard field goal and brought the score to 14-3.
The Tigers' momentum was not shaken with the score. Three plays after the kickoff, QB Jeremy Johnson landed a long pass into the arms of Ricardo Louis for a 46-yard gain and the touchdown. Cody Parkey's extra point was good.
In the second quarter, the Tigers repeated their offensive efforts without allowing a Catamount score. The first touchdown came about a minute into the quarter with Corey Grant rushing for a whopping 51 yards into the endzone to cap off another 6-play drive. Tre Mason, not wanting to be outdone by Grant, gained the second score of the second quarter with a 53-yard rush. The 1-play drive technically covered 48-yards due to an illegal motion penalty on the previous play.
The final score of the half belonged to Tiger Tony Stevens after a 9-play drive over 71 yards. Stevens grabbed a middle pass from Johnson and carried it 22-yards into the endzone. Parkey's extra point was good. The teams went to the locker room with a score of 42-3.
The domination continued after halftime. Auburn kept the Catamount offense to -1 yard on their opening possession and turned around for a score in 8 plays after getting the ball. Quan Bray got the score after carrying a Johnson pass for 3 yards, capping off the 65-yard drive.
Auburn's next possession yielded another touchdown. The big play of the drive was a 59-yard rush by Cameron Artis-Payne, but Artis-Payne also made the score with a 25-yard rush. The 4-play drive covered 86 yards in total.
In the 4th quarter, the Tigers scored one last time 10 seconds into the quarter. The 8-play drive covered 71 yards. Johnathan Ford made the touchdown with a 38-yard rush and the two point conversion attempt by Ryan White was unsuccessful. The final score of the game was set at 62-3.
Next week, the Tigers face a big challenge in College Station to take on Texas A&M. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
