An area lawmaker is again proposing a bill for next year’s legislative session in Montgomery that would castrate some sex offenders. The Times Daily of Florence reports Republican Rep. Steve Hurst of Munford has prefiled a bill that would require sex offenders 21-years-old or older be castrated before being released from prison if their victims were 12-years-old or younger.
Hurst reportedly proposed the same bill last year, and The Times Daily reports the bill never even made it out of committee. The bill says the surgical castration would be financed by the offender and at least nine states have some sort of chemical castration mandate in their laws.
The 2014 Alabama legislative session begins in three months on January 14.
