Steel workers now have the details of a severance package after the International Paper Courtland Mill closure. The TimesDaily of Florence reports United Steel Workers union officials say more than 800 members at the plant will be given a $2,000 up-front check and 1-and-a-half week’s pay for every year they’ve been employed with the plant.
Local 1161 president Bill Sneed is reported as saying members were receptive to the negotiated package although many are still shocked the plant is closing. According to The TimesDaily, the plant that employs more than 1,100 people announced in September that it would be closing by March.
Union officials tell the newspaper that the first wave of International Paper employees would be laid off the week of Dec. 2.
