Dozens of people have fallen ill with possible salmonella poisoning in one Alabama county after a weekend fundraiser. The Athens News Courier reports at least six cases of salmonella poisoning have been confirmed at the Athens-Limestone Hospital in Limestone County.
Authorities believe the people became ill from an annual bean dinner fundraiser that was held in Athens on Friday. An official from the hospital told The News Courier that the main symptoms were nausea, diarrhea and vomiting and said there were more than two dozen people on Monday in the waiting room with symptoms. Dozens more were seen on Saturday and Sunday.
Cases of salmonella were reportedly confirmed through stool samples and state officials will reportedly test food leftover from the fundraiser.
